Modernism Revisited 2026: International Conference on Architecture and Cultural Heritage

2026-05-07

The organizers of the upcoming international conference Modernism Revisited 2026 / ETOM Milestone Conference 2026 invite architects, urban planners, theorists, researchers, educators, and policymakers to engage in a discussion on the reinterpretation of the legacy of Modernism, its critical reflection, and the possibilities for its further development in the context of contemporary social, ecological, and cultural challenges. The conference will take place on 21–23 October 2026 at ODA Trenčín and forms part of the official programme of European Capital of Culture Trenčín 2026. The event is organized by the Jaromír Krejcar Society and the ETOM NEB Lab under the auspices of DOCOMOMO International and the Slovak Chamber of Architects.

Modernism — both as a historical movement and as a continuing architectural, technological, and cultural layer — continues to shape the way we build, inhabit, and imagine the world. Emerging within diverse political, climatic, and cultural contexts — from liberal democracies to centrally planned economies — it generated a wide spectrum of approaches to architecture, urbanism, and ways of living throughout the twentieth century.

Today, these multiple legacies face new realities: ecological transformation, demographic change, and the transformation of once-public infrastructures and institutions. Purely technocratic, aesthetically formalist, and ideologically dogmatic conceptions of Modernism have proven unsustainable; yet the theories, practices, and ideas of modern thinking continue to profoundly shape our realities, while simultaneously being constantly questioned and reassessed. To confront the current multi-layered crisis, it is necessary to reconsider the humanist, emancipatory, and social dimensions of Modernism. Its legacy endures as a structural framework that can be reimagined and filled with new contemporary ideas. Within the thematic framework of Typology – Topography – Strategy, the international conference Modernism Revisited aims to create a space for sharing and developing these ideas.
