Register of modern architecture in Slovakia is the outcome of the work of the Department of Architecture of the Institute of History, Slovak Academy of Sciences and presents the best works of 20th century Modernist architecture in Slovakia.

To mark World Heart Day, we are presenting a new collection entitled ‘Architecture for Health’.

Hospitals, polyclinics and sanatoriums are among the buildings that have significantly shaped the character of Slovak towns and cities. They are not merely places of healthcare — their architecture also tells a story of the development of medicine, society and the way in which ideas about the modern hospital changed during the 20th century. From the 1950s onwards, specialist architects in Slovakia were dedicated to the design of healthcare facilities, initially at Stavoprojekt Bratislava and later at the independent Zdravoprojekt. Thanks to their work, buildings were created that combined the practical requirements of healthcare with the ambitions of modern architecture. This collection presents a selection of works of healthcare architecture from the second half of the 20th century — hospitals, sanatoriums and polyclinics — which to this day form an important part of our towns and cities. It focuses on their architectural, urban planning and artistic qualities, which can serve as a starting point for their future maintenance, restoration or adaptation.
