The Type II hospital and outpatient clinic (designating regional and district hospitals) in Nové Zámky was designed on the outskirts of the city to serve as the centerpiece of a new planned hospital, school, and sports complex. The hospital project was originally based on a national competition for a universal design of a Type II hospital and outpatient clinic. However, as the requirements and specific needs of individual sites were refined, it was ultimately decided to develop a unique design. Along with the hospital buildings in Trebišov, Galanta, Bratislava-Ružinov, and Banská Bystrica, it ranks among the significant healthcare facility projects of the 1960s and 1970s. Their architectural and urban composition during this period is characterized by a horizontal base comprising shared diagnostic and treatment components, topped by the dominant vertical structure of the inpatient wing.
The inpatient wing of the hospital in Nové Zámky is designed as a fourteen-story monoblock with a five-wing layout. This structure protrudes from a two-story, expansive outpatient wing with a separate wing housing the pediatric clinic. As part of Phase II, architect Richard Pastor’s original design also called for the construction of a four-story polyclinic building on the southeastern edge of the complex, as well as a separate medical school with a dormitory and student housing. However, 18 years elapsed between the project’s inception and the final completion of construction, and during this period, not only did the required functional layout change, but so did the planned development of the surrounding area. The hospital and polyclinic in Nové Zámky ranks among the largest healthcare complexes in the country.
