The extensive complex of what is now Roosevelt Hospital stands on the outskirts of Banská Bystrica near the village of Podlavice. The hospital’s loose, expansive layout is sensitively integrated into the distinctive landscape of the Low Tatras foothills, with the 16-story inpatient wing serving as a prominent architectural landmark. Within the typology of healthcare buildings, this architectural concept—featuring a vertical monoblock and a horizontal base—represents a characteristic example of a large hospital complex with centralized operations in the late modernist style.
The sprawling three-story horizontal structure houses the adult outpatient clinic, operating rooms, X-ray facilities, laboratories, central sterilization, rehabilitation, and a pharmacy. The base is complemented by the children’s pavilion and children’s outpatient clinic, a blood transfusion station, and an administrative building. The inpatient wing consists of two double-wing high-rise buildings connected at the top by a two-story bridge. Their structure consists of a steel skeleton with a floor plan module of 6.6 m. The facade is formed by a suspended lightweight exterior cladding with solid panels (1.8 m wide) and window panels (2.4 m wide with triple-pane glazing) arranged in a checkerboard pattern. There are a total of 1,108 beds. With an original capacity of 1,108 beds and a built-up volume of nearly 470,000 m³, the hospital ranks among the largest healthcare complexes in the country.
The hospital and polyclinic in Banská Bystrica is a work of high architectural quality, characterized by the clean lines of its architectural elements and structures. This applies not only to its exterior appearance but also to the simple and clean design of its interior. In 1984, this project was awarded the highest national architectural prize by the Union of Slovak Architects.
In 2024, a radical renovation of the hospital began, which will remove
its most architecturally valuable elements. Only the outpatient clinic building will remain from the original structure.
