The Rožňava railway station’s main building is a unique and authentically preserved example of Late Modernism in Slovakia. It is situated south of the town itself, in the northeastern part of the municipality of Brzotín. Its eccentric location in relation to Rožňava was determined by the construction of the double-track Turňa nad Bodvou–Rožňava railway section in the 1950s. As part of the southern Zvolen–Košice route, the line bypassed the town of Rožňava.
The station building consists of a lower operational section and a taller passenger-handling volume containing a spacious concourse. A key feature of the concourse is its geometrically articulated ceiling with integrated lighting, which flows seamlessly from the interior into the exterior and defines the rhythm of the aluminium profiles of the lightweight façade. Equally distinctive is the internal gallery, which is projected onto the exterior façade as a solid surface featuring a monumental concrete-and-ceramic relief by Lýdia Čepková and Milan Čepek. The Čepeks were also the authors of the interior relief in the concourse. A broad yet airy monolithic staircase leads to the internal gallery. The remainder of the interior is complemented by original stone and wooden cladding, as well as a number of bespoke elements, including railings and display cases.
According to the surviving documentation, the station building was designed by M. Školníková under the direction of Ivan Šesták of the State Institute for Transport Design in Prague. The building was opened on 2 March 1973 as part of the celebrations marking the 700th anniversary of the town of Rožňava. It was constructed in a shortened timeframe by workers from the Košice branch of Železničné staviteľstvo. The station continues to serve its original purpose, although it is now used only to a limited extent. Owing to its exceptionally high degree of overall authenticity, the station’s main building was declared a national cultural monument in October 2025.
