The Type II Hospital and Polyclinic in Petržalka is a characteristic example of the design concept for large healthcare facilities of the 1970s and 1980s, a period marked by a gradual shift away from overly vertical and monoblock designs. The spatial layout is replaced by the so-called modified pavilion system. In this system, the individual sections of the hospital are distributed across several interconnected blocks. The architectural and spatial design thus organizes the hospital as a series of linear, rectangular volumes of varying heights, with the main facades oriented east-west. This allowed for the desired phased construction of the building and the horizontal interconnection of all operational units.
Each inpatient block also has its own vertical circulation system, connecting to the diagnostic and treatment departments. The diagnostic and treatment units are located at the base of the inpatient blocks. The service and technical facilities of the complex are situated on its eastern edge near the road, thus keeping the main outpatient and inpatient areas close to green spaces and a body of water.
With a capacity of 700 beds, the hospital is a key public facility in Bratislava’s largest housing estate, Petržalka. It is accessible from the southern part, from the Lúky residential zone; the northern inpatient section faces the quiet surroundings of the Zrkadlový háj forest park. All entrances are oriented away from roads and parking lots so that traffic does not intrude into the complex’s recreational zone. As with the construction of the health center in Karlová Ves, this project also separates vehicular and pedestrian traffic on two levels.
