The research institute complex is located on the right bank of the Biskupický Canal, close to the city centre. Its location was determined both by access to the material source for balneotherapy procedures and by plans to urbanise this part of the city. The complex consists of two relatively separate facilities: the experimental institute and the clinical section. The experimental section opened in 1989 and the clinical section, which has 110 beds, opened five years later. The building's structural system consists of a prefabricated concrete skeleton. The layout is organised in the form of a double-loaded corridor scheme. The perimeter shell comprises wall panels and distinctive beige ceramic cladding, which visually unifies the entire complex and emphasises its robust sculptural appearance. In front of the main entrance is a sculpture by Jozef Jankovič. The relief in the foyer was created by the ceramicist Juraj Marth. The design elements in the conference room and the font of the information system were designed by the academic painter Ivica Krošláková. The building is one of a series of striking examples of post-war modernism that were gradually built on the banks of the Biskupský Canal in the second half of the 20th century.
At the beginning of 2026, the institute's management announced plans for the building's complete modernisation, affecting both the interior and exterior.
