Juniorhotel Sputnik of the Youth Travel Agency (CKM) was built on the basis of an architectural and volumetric study on the shore of an artificial lake, which was created by gravel extraction during the construction of the Štrkovec housing estate in Ružinov. On the site with a favourable southern orientation and in connection with the promenade path around the lake, the architect Dušan Bystrický designed a hotel for youth as a dominant feature of the entire recreational area. In terms of mass, the building follows the usual scheme of hotel facilities in the form of a horizontal base with a social and operational function and a vertical accommodation part. The accentuated mass of the staircase is extended to the outer perimeter of the building.
The internal layout of the hotel, on the other hand, is quite unusual. When designing the common areas, the emphasis was on their illumination and on preserving the view of the lake. The core of the layout is the central hotel lobby, which takes up the height of all the floors of the accommodation area and is glazed towards the south. The hall functions as an enclosed and roofed atrium, to which the balconies with entrances to the hotel rooms are oriented. This spatial arrangement is reminiscent of a traditional urban balcony house with an inner courtyard that creates opportunities for social interaction. The hotel atrium also features the most striking element of the entire interior - an artistically designed air conditioning unit combined with lighting. The load-bearing structure of the building consists of a precast reinforced concrete skeleton. The façade is clad with white ceramic profiled tiles that create a plastic surface.
