The history of the Trnava University Hospital complex dates back to the first half of the 19th century, when a general public county hospital was built on this site. The land, located on the site of the former university gardens in the southern suburbs of Trnava, gradually transformed into the city’s largest healthcare center. In the first half of the 20th century, several new buildings were constructed here, including the surgical pavilion, the infectious diseases pavilion, and the internal medicine pavilion. Postwar construction of healthcare facilities in the city therefore did not take the form of a centralized hospital complex, but rather involved the expansion of the existing development through the addition of separate pavilions.
One of the most significant structures on this campus is the gynecology and obstetrics pavilion. The building is situated on the complex’s southeastern edge in a park-like setting. Its H-shaped floor plan consists of two main, perpendicularly connected blocks oriented north-south. The entire building is characterized by a simple design and material scheme, based on the horizontal principle of continuous lines between windows and balconies. The building is accessible from the north, and its mass gradually recedes toward the south to ensure optimal sunlight exposure. On the west side, the building is connected via a low, two-story structure to the former surgical pavilion from 1962, built according to a design by architect Štefan Imrich. In 1979, the gynecology and obstetrics pavilion was honored at an architectural exhibition organized by the Union of Slovak Architects.
